Radio Play (2017-19)

Radio Play was an independent, infrequent and idiotic radio show – a platform to host artworks and thinking by artists we admire. After an initial performance in 2017, we hosted seven live online broadcasts between 2018 and 2019.

First developed at Summer Lodge 2017 (at Nottingham Trent University), Radio Play is an experiment in organising an independent space for artworks, discussion and ideas. We got to play out our fantasies of being radio hosts, while we learned the ins and outs of producing and distributing sound, for in person and online events. We also learned the pleasures and demands of organising a semi-regular and unfunded platform in which we were inviting work by our peers. We were glad to do it, even if we realised that we had bitted off a little more than we could chew.

One thing in particular that became clear for us was the importance of inviting peers who had never worked with sound, alongside more expert practitioners – and thinking about how this context could offer an opportunity to think about how they might stretch themselves through, or find pleasure with, this medium.
